Entry for October 22, 2006: Help Me Understand My Anger

To understand my anger and why I get angry at God it might help to understand a bit about anger.  Like where does it come from?  What causes it?  What is anger?

Anger is a normal reaction to a set of circumstances, like an injustice, a frustrating situation or a situation that I cannot control as examples.  I might say things like, "I can't believe I did that."  Or, "You really tick me off," and so on.

It's important to know that anger can be both helpful and harmful.  "Venting" anger in appropriate ways can motivate me to overcome an obstacle and acheive a goal.  However, if I let my anger take control of me, it can become harmful by "attacking" my health through high blood pressure, stress, and anxiety attacks.  Also, if I fail to control my anger, I can find myself in abusive situations and ultimately breaking the law.  I could end up physically hurting my spouse, my children, another person, damaging property or injuring myself.

Anger is one of the most poorly handled emotions in society today because, as a society, we're not taught how to handle this emotion properly.  And as military personnel, we are taught to use our anger, then never shown how to turn it off.  This is why God said in the Bible, "Be angry and sin not."(Psalm 4:4; Ephesians 4:26, New King James Version)

How does this apply to combat vets?

It's best explained in Scripture.  Psalm 14:17 in the Revised Standard Version reads, "A man of quick temper acts foolishly, but a man of discretion is patient."  And in the same translation, Ecclesiastes 7: 8-9 says, "The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.  Be not quick to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools."

You see Brothers, anger causes us pain and in fact causes us to live in more anger.  This is why it's easier for us, for me, to be angry at God; to blame God for what doesn't go the way I think it should.
