Entry for September 15, 2006: Making Peace With Who You Are
"...godliness with contentment is great gain." 1 Timothey 6:6 (NIV) "Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be happy with what you have." There was a TV series called "Dobie Gillis" back in the 60's. One of the lead characters was Maybard G. Crebbs, a beatnick played by Bob Denver (a.k.a. Gilligan). In one show Maynard told Dobie that he planned to make a pilgrimage to the Far East to talk to one of the Tibetan wise men to find out "the meaning of life," or basically who he was. Dobie challenged Maynard with, "You'll never find yourself on a mountain in Tibet." "Why not?" Maynard asked. "Because you didn't lose yourself on a mountain in Tibet." answered Dobie. Where did you lose yourself? We can't find ourselves by looking on any mountain or any "new place." We really can't find ourselves by "going back," either. We have to look inside. However, all too often the pain is too difficult to get past. It's too hard to see past what's happened in that theater of operations whetehr it's Chu Lai, the Rock Pile, Desert Storm, Baghdad, Kuwait, Kosavo or where ever ir may be. The memories, the vivid dreams, the visuals we see are just too painful to relive. That's why Jesus came, "to proclaim liberty to those who are oppressed," (Luke 4:18, NKJV). In order that we might be free from the oppressive; the depressive bonds of PTSD and have peace of mind, soul and spirit as we walk thorugh life with Him.
