Thought For September 8, 2006: A Heart, Soul and Mind Held Captive
One of the hardest things to do is to relive a past raumatic experience, over and over again. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is just such a monster. PTSD comes and goes in cycles. The medical types call this regressions and exascerbations. Veterans; soldiers who have been in combat and deal with PTSD in their lives call it pain. The unfortunate reality is that we won't readily admit to this pain. It's in those instances our families suffer from what's known as "projection". That is, we tend to "project" our issues on them by causing our loved ones to live their lives through our trauma. Through our desires to be "left alone" as example, we make our families isolate and avoid friendships. Or we withdraw from our loved ones as we isolate emotionally attempting to avoid stimulating a reaction. In turn, our families shut down emotionally. We also avoid our families out of an inability to give and receive love. Love has been turned off because of training and continuous exposure to combat and it's accomanying violence only to be replaced by anger. The cycle of PTSD can be triggered by virtually anything such as noise, smells, sudden actions and so on. But there is freedom through the continuing healing of Jesus Christ. In Isaiah 61:1, the Lord says he has come to set the captive free and to heal the brokenhearted. Jesus repeated this passage as He taught in the Temple. This is not only a promise for one time, but a continuing action as God's Holy Spirit walks with us through our woundings and pain from combat and reveals to us the places in our hearts and souls and even our minds that need His touch. Finally, by His Holy Spirit, God helps us to learn to love and freely give and receive love again as He teaches us to control our anger. Won't you call or email us for more information?
